Phumula is a non-profit organisation, catering for the impoverished elderly, children with special needs and AIDS orphans.
Although the organisation receives government subsidies, it depends on donations for capital expenditure.
With the help of an Austrian lady, Rosl Kiech who lived in South Africa for many years, Father Karl Kuppelwieser bought a farm for impoverished aged near Bronkhorstspruit in South Africa, which is jointly run by the Department of Social Services and the Father Charles Trust.
Pumula currently accommodates 40 frail and impoverished people and is run by the Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary.
We are looking to enlarge the home to accommodate a further 80 frail impoverished people and AIDS orphans.
The farm is also used to train local impoverished farmers in agriculture. A guest house and conference and event venue is also available.
Phumula is a home for the aged and frail, but - at the same time - it is much more: It is a working farm, which provides meat, vegetables and fruit for the old-age home and allows it to be self-sufficient in food.
The farm is also used as a demonstration farm and will develop its farming expertise further.
Phumula also has a guest house attached to it. The guest house caters for the urbanites looking for the peace and quiet of the Highveld.
Phumula is at the moment starting a health project for the local community, focusing on assistance for the terminally ill.
Phumula is a conference venue which can be hired for events.
